Utah Transit Authority has received notification that it has been awarded $250,000 from the Federal Transit Administration for design and engineering of a new intermodal transit center in Orem, Utah. The funds are part of a discretionary grant awarded to UTA for the development of transit centers along the Wasatch Front. The grant will allow UTA to advance design and engineering on the Orem Intermodal Center, which will be completed prior to the opening of UTA's FrontRunner Provo to Salt Lake City commuter rail line in 2012 or 2013. The Orem Intermodal Center will serve FrontRunner, UTA buses and a proposed bus rapid transit line, which will connect Utah Valley University, Brigham Young University and downtown Provo. "The new Orem Intermodal Center will be a key transfer point for the residents of Utah County," said John Inglish, UTA general manager. "It is a critical part of the transportation infrastructure that is being developed in Utah County." The $10 million Orem Intermodal Center is planned to include a Frontrunner station, 14 bus bays and amenities such as shelters, benches, bike facilities, ticket vending machines, and 400 parking stalls.
