Could this be the end of an era?  Well, not quite, but it was “good riddance” to orange cones near the West Valley City offices Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010.

UTA, West Valley City and local residents marked the completion of construction along Constitution Boulevard by giving those who have been affected a chance to ring in the season by smashing orange cones with pumpkins.  Businesses also provided residents with a chance to win gift certificates, with one lucky winner walking away with a $500 gift certificate to Valley Fair Mall.

Dozens of cones were stacked into a pyramid and representatives of nearby businesses were given a chance to symbolically say good riddance to construction by knocking the tower down. Attendees also had a chance to pick out a pumpkin to take home for Halloween.  In addition, a professional pumpkin carver and face painters were on hand to help mark the occasion and West Valley City Mayor Mike Winder reiterated that the line is set to open Aug. 7, 2011.

UTA Project Manager Jim Webb thanked residents and businesses for their patience during construction and urged people to shop for the holidays at local businesses.  “This has truly been a team effort,” Webb said.

“Today signifies that we are another step closer to offering commuters a high-speed transit option in our city,” Winder said.
