The next time you’re at the North Temple Bridge Station, look around. The stairs you’re climbing, the elevator that transports passengers to the TRAX stop, and even the roof that shields riders from the elements are part of a work of transit art that’s designed to be seen 24-hours a day.

Designed by artist Catherine Widgery, the station utilizes etched glass panels that evoke the changing weather along the Wasatch Front. The installation comes to life at dusk when the structure is illuminated by a changing pattern of purple, green, blue and pink lights.

The North Temple Station Bridge is part of an effort to make North Temple a welcoming corridor to the city, said Kevin Cox, Airport Line project director. Within the next several weeks, LED lights will also be added to the canopies at Jackson Euclid, Fair Park, Power Station and 1950 West Station, providing riders with a truly colorful transit experience.

The colored LED lighting was funded by Salt Lake City, Cox said. LED lights were specifically used because they last longer than traditional incandescent bulbs. Lighting patterns can be set to match the season or the color scheme at the platform.

We’ll announce on Facebook when colored LED lights are added to the Airport Line stops. Until then, head downtown and take a look at North Temple Bridge Station – a vibrant addition to Salt Lake City’s nightlife.
