The grand opening of Salt Lake’s first modern streetcar is less than eight weeks away. To prepare for the start of service, UTA will start pre-revenue testing tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 17.

Two test trains will begin running on a regular schedule and operating at speeds of up to 25 mph. The testing is designed to help train streetcar operators as well as to test vehicles, signals and overall safety in advance of the Dec. 8 S-Line opening.

With S-Line trains in operation, it is important to use caution when entering the rail corridor and walking or driving over the tracks. The S-Line has multiple crossings, some with stop lights and others with stop signs. When approaching an S-Line crossing, be sure to stop completely and look in both directions before proceeding. Trains, as well as cyclists and pedestrians in the rail corridor, have the right-of-way. Trains will not stop at crossings. Vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists crossing the tracks should always yield to trains and other rail corridor traffic.

South Salt Lake, Salt Lake City and Transit police officers will be periodically stationed at select S-Line crossings to help remind drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to stop before proceeding across the tracks. For more information on how to stay safe near rail lines, click here.

When the S-Line opens in December, it will transport passengers along a historic rail corridor from the Sugar House shopping district to the Central Pointe TRAX Station. The S-Line corridor will feature seven stations as well as a landscaped linear park with a walking and biking path that connects to Parley’s Trail.
