Public transit is a great way to travel efficiently, save money and help the environment. Sometimes, it can even help you find true love. In honor of Valentine’s Day, we’re sharing the stories of two couples who met while riding UTA. Happy Valentine’s Day, and keep your eyes open. Your special someone could be just a train or bus ride away.

Miguel Mendoza and Christie Duong

Christie and Miguel

Met in October 2011 while riding the TRAX Red Line

Christie first met Miguel in October, while riding TRAX home from class. She noticed him listening in on a conversation she was having with a friend. Soon, Miguel joined in the conversation, and something about his personality caught Christie’s attention.

“At first I was a little shocked, like ‘Hey, thanks for eavesdropping,’” she said. “By the end of the ride, I realized I really liked him. His stop was approaching and before he left, he asked for my number.”

Christie agreed to give Miguel her number, and the two have been together since then. Christie said it’s unlikely that she and Miguel would have met if they hadn’t been riding UTA, since the pair didn’t have classes or friends in common.

“Who knew a TRAX ride home would help me meet the man of my dreams,” Christie said. “Thanks, UTA!”

Russell and Jana Duncan

Jana and Russell

Met in March 2011 while riding an express bus to Salt Lake City

Russell and Jana Duncan met while riding an express bus from Utah County to an internship program at the Utah State Capitol. It was the last day of the internship program, Jana said, making it the last time either of them would ride the express bus to Salt Lake City.

“I got on at Provo, and he got on at Orem, and he sat in the empty seat next to me.  We started talking and didn’t stop until we had to get off at Salt Lake,” Jana said.

The two exchanged phone numbers, started dating and were married in December 2011. Jana credits public transit for bringing them together, since the two attended different universities.

“If it hadn’t been for that bus, we would have never met,” she said.
