Sweet

Tucked next to an apartment complex and a laundromat, this tiny diner is easy to miss. If you’re lucky enough to stumble across Penny Anne’s Cafe, you won’t be disappointed. For the last five years, sisters Penny Anne and Cindy have been serving slices of pie alongside classic diner items like hotcakes and omelets. Sister and co-owner Cindy Lynn said that the coconut cashew white chocolate chip (pictured above) and lemon raspberry cream pies are customer favorites, but they also offer classics like banana and key lime. In honor of National Pie Day, Penny Anne’s will offer $2 slices of pie on Saturday, Jan. 23. The diner is located at 1810 Main Street in Salt Lake City and is accessible via route 17. They also have a location in Draper at 280 East 12300 South, accessible via routes 811 and F546 and another opening soon at 1856 5400 South in Taylorsville that can be accessed by routes 54 or 217.

Savory
For many youngsters, writing your name on the wall at The Pie is a right of passage. It’s not just the edgy atmosphere that’s made The Pie a local favorite for more than 30 years – it’s the legendary pizza pies themselves. Diners can choose from unique options like The Wise Guy, a cream cheese, spinach and artichoke combo, or test the limits of their stomach with the 23-inch super pizza. Since The Pie opened in 1980 at its original 1320 E. 200 South location accessible from routes 220, 2, 3 and 9, the restaurant has expanded to four other spots, three of which are close to UTA bus routes: 275 S. 1300 East near routes 3, 9, 220 and 354; 7186 S. Union Park in Midvale near route 218; and 4300 Harrison Blvd. in Ogden near routes 455, 473, 603, 625 and 645.

Honorable Mention

Nothing goes better with a warm slice of pie than a big scoop of ice cream. It seemed only natural that brothers Alex and Issac “Zeek” Ames take the combination to the next level by combing ice cream and pie into one decadent dessert. Zeek’s Pie Shake Parlour offers pie and cheesecake shakes in several flavors, the most popular being banana cream and chocolate cream Oreo. Zeek’s is now run by Alex and wife Chelsea and is located at 27 N. 100 West in Provo, near bus route 850. Zeek’s is offering buy one get one free 16 oz. pie shakes on Saturday in honor of National Pie Day.
