FrontRunner service to all stations will resume on Monday, Sept. 3. See our Labor Day holiday service schedule here.

Limited FrontRunner Service on Saturday, Sept. 1 to Accommodate PTC Testing

On Saturday, Sept. 1, UTA will suspend FrontRunner service between North Temple and Ogden stations. Buses and vans will be available to transport riders between each FrontRunner station and will run at approximately the same time as scheduled Saturday FrontRunner trains. FrontRunner will serve stations between North Temple and Provo on Saturday, Sept. 1.

FrontRunner service to all stations will resume on Monday, Sept. 3. See our Labor Day holiday service schedule here.

This one-day reduction in service is necessary as we test Positive Train Control (PTC) requirements mandated by the federal government. Although we’re conducting the majority of positive train control testing on Sundays and evenings when FrontRunner is not in service, we must suspend service on Saturday, Sept. 1 to stay within the testing schedule.

Q&A

What stations will FrontRunner serve on Saturday, Sept. 1?

FrontRunner trains will only serve stations between Provo and North Temple. Buses and vans will serve stations between North Temple and Ogden. UTA vehicles will strive to maintain the same schedule as FrontRunner trains, but delays and longer trip times are possible due to road construction and vehicle traffic.

How do I travel between Ogden and Salt Lake City on Saturday, Sept. 1?

Simply arrive at your FrontRunner station at the time you’d normally catch the train. A UTA employee will direct you to the appropriate bus or van. We will also have signs on stations directing riders to bus loading points.

How do I travel between Salt Lake City and Provo on Saturday, Sept. 1?

FrontRunner will operate normally between North Temple and Provo Stations on Saturday, Sept. 1. If you’re coming from the north, simply transfer from your bus to a FrontRunner train at North Temple.

Will I be required to pay bus fare or FrontRunner fare on Saturday, Sept. 1?

If you are traveling within the suspended FrontRunner service area onboard a bus or van, only a bus fare will be required. If you travel south of North Temple station onboard a FrontRunner train, standard FrontRunner fare rates apply.

Why are you limiting FrontRunner service on a Saturday?

UTA rail planners carefully examined ridership data when determining the best day to limit service. Saturday, Sept. 1 was chosen because there are fewer high-ridership community and sporting events scheduled for that day compared to other Saturdays in September.

What is Positive Train Control?

Positive train control (PTC) is a rail safety system mandated by the federal government. Many PTC safety features have been in place since FrontRunner opened in 2008, including a signal enforcement system that prevents train-to-train collisions and an Automatic Train Control (ATC) system that prevents trains from operating above set speed restrictions. UTA is currently completing enhancements and additional controls to meet technical specifications of the federal requirements.

Should I expect more FrontRunner closures in the future?

No. UTA does not anticipate closing the system for additional testing. We don't expect that this closure will need to be repeated on the south end of the FrontRunner alignment.
