Overview

The Sugar House Transit Corridor Alternatives Analysis began in January 2007. The purpose of the analysis is to evaluate transit alternatives for the area between 1700 South and I-80, and from TRAX to 1300 East. At the end of the analysis, UTA will determine a locally preferred transit alternative identified for further study.

UTA, South Salt Lake, and Salt Lake City have identified the following six key criteria for the transit solution in this corridor. They are:

  1. Frequent stops
  2. Low speeds
  3. Pedestrian-friendly crossings
  4. An urban linear park
  5. Broad community support
  6. Creative funding solutions (i.e., local participation, cooperative agreements, etc.)

Alternatives Analysis
The following alternatives were presented for public review and comment at an open house held on July 12, 2007. For more information about the open houses, click here.

The study will accomplish the following tasks:

  • Writing a purpose and need statement, incorporating the six desired transit characteristics identified above.
  • Market analysis, to determine where transit trips begin and end in the study area.
  • Existing conditions analysis, including traffic circulation and volumes, transit ridership, bicycle and pedestrian activity, and land-use patterns.
  • Talking with members of the public and key stakeholders, to learn more about how transit should fit within the context of Sugarhouse communities.
  • Developing a "universe of alternatives", which includes all the potential transit alternatives that might potentially fit in the study area.
  • Refining the "universe of alternatives" through several analysis processes, in order to end up with a locally preferred alternative that meets the six transit characteristics identified by Salt Lake City and South Salt Lake City.

The project's Steering Committee, which includes members from South Salt Lake City, Salt Lake City and UTA, will provide guidance and direction for the project. The study team will also work with a stakeholders committee, made up of members from the following organizations:

  • Sugar House Community Council
  • Liberty Wells Community Council
  • People's Freeway Community Council
  • Burton Place Community Council
  • PRATT
  • Westminster College
  • Sugar House Merchants Association
  • Sugar House Trolley Association
  • Fairmont Aquatic Center
  • Cascade Partners
  • Red Mountain Realty
  • South Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce
  • Salt Lake City Council
  • South Lake City Council
  • Deseret Industries
  • Johansen & Thackeray

Comments from Public Open Houses
Public open houses on the Sugar House Transit Corridor Alternatives Analysis were held on April 2 and July 12, 2007. The open houses allowed the public to review information on proposed alternatives to improve future transit in South Salt Lake and Salt Lake City. The public was able to provide input. Click on a link below to view a summary of the open house and to read comments received from the public.
