Why is Service between Ogden and Pleasant View Being Suspended?

UTA is implementing Positive Train Control (PTC). This federally-required safety system ensures that trains stop at designated locations and prevents them from reaching excessive speeds or entering unauthorized portions of track. PTC will be fully implemented between Provo and Ogden stations in coming months.

UTA's rail system between Ogden and Pleasant View is unique. The tracks north of Ogden station are owned by Union Pacific. UTA would be required to install the Union Pacific PTC system on FrontRunner trains operating on this section of track.  FrontRunner passengers riding to and from Pleasant View would have to transfer to differently outfitted trains at Ogden. This creates a significant challenge for riders, additional implementation costs estimated at more than $1 million, and additional operating expenses. As a result, service to Pleasant View will be suspended effective Aug. 12, 2018.
