Spring is the perfect time of year to ride Utah’s first modern streetcar. The S-Line connects riders from Central Pointe TRAX Station into the heart of Sugar House, for a total of seven stops near community centers, parks, shopping and dining. A recently extended schedule means that the S-Line now offers the same hours of service as TRAX, running from approximately 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on weekdays and 6 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Read on for four reasons to explore the S-Line this season.

Play

Fairmont Park is in full bloom this month. Take a stroll under flowering trees, feed the ducks or relax and enjoy the crisp spring air. The 30-acre park also has an indoor swimming pool, skate park and fire pits. It is located just south of the Fairmont stop. You can also make a short walk and use The Draw tunnel under 1300 East to access Sugar House Park.

Eat

Some of the city’s best dishes are just steps from the S-Line. Mom’s Kitchen gets rave reviews for its authentic Chinese and Taiwanese food and is conveniently located at 2233 State Street, between the 300 East stop and the South Salt Lake City stop. The Sugarmont stop provides easy access to local favorites like Este Pizzeria and Sugar House BBQ. From the Fairmont stop, a hungry rider can find everything from Belgian waffles to Vietnamese Pho. The Food Truck League has also returned to Sugarmont Plaza for the summer.

Exercise

The S-Line is located within an urban greenway that also features a cycling and walking path. This protected trail is a great option for cyclists who want an alternative to riding alongside traffic or city-dwellers looking for a little peace and quiet. Don’t feel like making a round trip? Jog the two-mile length of the S-Line, then relax and let the streetcar take you back home. Or, if you’re feeling ambitious, continue on past the S-Line limits to explore the rest of the Parley’s Trail system.

Explore

For years, the Hidden Hollow Natural Area was little more than a dumping ground for trash and construction debris. The land had once been the site of the original Sugar House Park, but had been forgotten as development grew and the park was moved across 1300 East to replace the state penitentiary. In the 1990’s, a group of elementary school children led the charge to clean the area and restore Parley’s Creek. Today, the five-acre nature preserve is perfect for bird watching or enjoying a shady lunch. Hidden Hollow is located approximately two blocks east of the Fairmont stop at 1229 E.
