Bombardier BiLevel Commuter Rail Cars
The FrontRunner vehicle fleet includes eight Bombardier BiLevel coach cars and 12 BiLevel cab cars that were built by Bombardier Transportation in Thunder Bay, Canada and Plattsburg, New York.
BiLevel cars have an upper and lower seating level, as well as an intermediate mezzanine level at each end of the car. Fully accessible restrooms are located on the mezzanine level in the car farthest from the locomotive. Doors located at each end of the car allow passengers to move between cars – even while the train is moving. Cars feature overhead heating and air conditioning, power outlets and wireless internet.
BiLevel cab cars are located at the south end of each FrontRunner consist. Cab cars allow for push-pull operation. Push-pull operation allows train operators to remotely control the train’s locomotive from the cab car – thus eliminating the need to physically turn the train around.

Comet I Single Level Commuter Rail Cars
The newest additions to the FrontRunner vehicle fleet, Comet cars, come to Utah via New Jersey. UTA recently added 25 refurbished former New Jersey Transit Comet I cars to the FrontRunner fleet.
Originally purchased from Pullman-Standard for New Jersey’s Erie-Lackawanna Railroad commuter services in the early 1970s, these cars were simply called “suburban push-pull cars.” After New Jersey Transit took over commuter rail operations in the 1980s, the cars were rebuilt and renamed Comet cars. The cars were named “Comets” because they originally served on New Jersey Transit’s Raritan Valley Line during the 1970s. The Raritan Valley Line was home to the famous Blue Comet luxury train from 1929 to 1941.
UTA Comet cars were refurbished by Bombardier Transportation. Exteriors have been updated to match FrontRunner’s distinct blue, white and red paint scheme, while interiors maintain their vintage look. Comet cars are equipped with heating, air conditioning and wireless internet.
Comet I Car Quick Facts:
- Length: 85 ft
- Width: 8.7 ft
- Height: 12.67 ft
- Weight: 74,000 lbs.
- Train Seating Capacity: 106, Maximum Load: 223
- Maximum Speed: 79 mph
