
FrontRunner South Construction Update*

Construction is progressing on UTA’s FrontRunner South commuter rail line. This line will be constructed on the east side of the Union Pacific Railroad track from Salt Lake City to 9800 South in Sandy and on the west side of the track all the way to Provo. The track is between 25 and 40 feet away from the Union Pacific Railroad track. The project has been split into “construction areas” numbered 10 through 16 for planning and information purposes.

Note: Construction crews will not be working Friday, December 25 through Sunday, January 3 in observance of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. We will resume sending the weekly construction update on Thursday, December 31 for construction activities taking place the first week of January.
Area 16 - Downtown Salt Lake City to 4500 South (Murray)
Construction Activity:
Fiber and power utility work will take place near 3300 South this week.
Crews will begin construction on the new UTA commuter rail bridge at Central Avenue this week. Beginning Tuesday, a crane will be brought into the area and crews will drive sheet pile.
Traffic Impacts:
From February 10th through the 23rd, there will be a lane closure for utility work on 3300 South between I-15 and 500 feet west of 900 West.
Central Avenue will close to through traffic on Tuesday, February 9th for bridge construction. The road will remain closed until June.
Salt Lake Central Station:
Station complete.
Area 15 - 4500 South (Murray) to Wasatch Street/8000 South (Midvale)
Construction Activity:
Crews will continue work on the northern pier cap, grade the slope near the bridge and form and pour concrete for the slope at the I-215 westbound bridge. Crews will finish driving H-pile at the 7200 South bridge and install shoring and excavate for the bridge’s southern abutment. At Center and Wasatch Streets crews will be placing surcharge.
Traffic Impacts:
There are currently no impacts to motorists in this area.
Murray Station:
There are no construction activities to report.
Area 14 - Wasatch Street/8000 South (Midvale) to 14600 South (Bluffdale)
Construction Activity:
Progress continues behind Salt Lake Community College’s Miller Campus at 9800 South as crews construct a bridge that flies over the Union Pacific Railroad tracks. This is the area where FrontRunner will move from the east side to the west side of the tracks.
Crews continue construction of the south approach wall at the flyover bridge and will also be forming ballast walls and stripping forms from the bridge deck. Between 114th South and 123rd South crews will conduct jack and bore work near a private crossing and clean out a casing. At Corner Canyon crews continue to place geo foam and will start mass embankment work in the area as well.
Traffic Impacts:
At 10000 South in Sandy there will be truck traffic with flaggers Monday through Thursday.
At 104th South Jordan Gateway there will be a northbound lane closure with flaggers Monday through Thursday.
At 146th South there will be truck traffic with flaggers on Thursday between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m., a full closure Friday night from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Saturday morning, and a single lane closure on Saturday all day after 6:00 a.m.
South Jordan Station:
Lightweight fill for the flyover bridge construction is being stored at the site of the future South Jordan park and ride lot.
Draper Future Station:
There are no construction activities to report.

Area 13 - 14600 South (Bluffdale) to Thanksgiving Point (Lehi)
Construction Activity:
Now that the irrigation season is finished, crews will conduct significant canal improvement and relocation work in the Jordan Narrows.
Just south of 146th South, crews will install a box culvert and pour concrete for the floor, and at the northern Jordan River bridge, crews will install shoring for one of the piers, form the pier soffit, and form, tie rebar and pour concrete for the north abutment and backfill it.
Work on realigning 1300 West south of where the road crosses the canal will begin this week. Also near this location, crews will clear and grub the corridor and begin mass excavation on the east side of the tracks to prepare for relocating Union Pacific. Further south of this, crews will place sub ballast and work on mass embankment for Union Pacific’s grade.
At the South Jordan Canal multi plate structure, crews will form, tie rebar and pour concrete for a retaining wall, the floor and a cast-in-place wall. Crews will also be backfilling at the structure.
Traffic Impacts:
There are currently no impacts to motorists in this area.

Area 12 - Thanksgiving Point (Lehi) to Main Street (American Fork)
Construction Activity:
At the pedestrian tunnel, crews will clean up the boring operation and finish the storm drain system. At the 2300 West bridge, crews will finish mobilizing into the area and install a sheet cell for the southern abutment of the bridge and also begin installing shoring Friday.
Excavation work for one of the retaining walls that will run behind the Cranberry Farms neighborhood will begin this week.
The 2100 North bridge in Lehi will consist of two abutments on each end of the bridge and five center piers with the piers being numbered 1 through 5, for this publication, starting at the southern end of the bridge. Crews will continue forming and tying rebar for the footing at pier #3 and also continue work on the fascia at the northern abutment.
Between 2100 North and 1500 North crews will begin mass embankment work, and at 500 West crews will remove a man hole, construct a new one and extend a casing. Work on a box culvert in the area between 500 West and 900 North will also take place.
Traffic Impacts:
The single lane drop on Garden Drive on the west side of the road by the golf course continues on Monday and Tuesday this week.
Also on Garden Drive, there will be truck traffic with flaggers all week near the entrance to Cranberry Farms.
There will also be truck traffic with flaggers at 2100 North and 1500 North all week.
Work at 500 West 300 North in Lehi continues on Monday with the southbound lane being closed at the tracks and 300 North being closed completely.
Lehi Station:
A portion of the Lehi Station Park and Ride Lot is now open for public use. Crews will continue installing light pole foundations in another area of the lot.

Area 11 - Main Street (American Fork) to University Parkway (Orem)
Construction Activity:
In American Fork, crews will be continuing utility work between 7350 West at Main Street and 200 South, installing permanent fencing between Storrs Avenue and 100 West, and placing structural embankment between 1100 South and 1500 South.
In Vineyard, crews will install permanent fencing between 6400 North and 5200 North, and continue to surface, line and dress the track between 5200 North and 400 North. Between 400 North and Geneva Road crews will continue to install a catch basin as well as cut a v-ditch, place bottom ballast and distribute rail.

American Fork Station:
There are no construction activities to report.
Vineyard Future Station:
There are no construction activities to report.
Orem Station:
There are no construction activities to report.

Area 10 - University Parkway (Orem) to Center Street (Provo)
Construction Activity:
Significant progress has been made in Area 10 along the Union Pacific Railroad corridor between University Parkway in Orem and Freedom Boulevard in Provo. Crews have prepared a path for FrontRunner by grading and clearing the right-of-way and relocating water lines. Drainage and irrigation installations are generally complete in this area, and main line earthwork has been finalized from University Parkway to 2000 South in Orem and from the Provo River bridge to 500 West in Provo. At-grade crossing improvements have also been completed at 900 West, 700 West, 500 West and Freedom Boulevard.
Crews will continue placing top ballast between University Parkway in Orem and 1680 North in Provo. They will also continue installation of permanent barbed wire fencing and surcharge placement between 820 North and the Provo River.
Traffic Impacts:
There will be truck traffic with flaggers at 820 North in Provo on Monday and Tuesday.
Wednesday through Friday there will be truck traffic with flaggers at Draper Lane.
Provo Station:
There are no construction activities to report.
Hobble Creek Wetlands Project — Springville, Utah
Description:
Although FrontRunner’s terminus is located in Provo, crews have finished construction on a floodplain south of Provo in Springville, Utah, to offset wetlands impacts related to building commuter rail in Utah County. In cooperation with the June Sucker Recovery Implementation Program and other agencies, this project was constructed adjacent to a new Hobble Creek channel, a tributary to Utah Lake, and will replace major wetlands functions and vegetation and provide a protected nursery habitat for newly hatched June sucker fish. Access during Construction
UTA is committed to maintaining access to all of the businesses and residences along the construction corridor.
Construction Hours
Construction on the project is permitted to take place between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday each week. Additionally, specific activities may require different working hours depending upon the conditions and will be coordinated with city officials.
