Overview

Utah needs a balanced transportation solution with improved highways and mass transit to meet its growing population’s needs. A regional commuter rail system is an integral part of that solution. UTA and many partner organizations participated in the environmental studies for the commuter rail system. UTA opened the first phase of the commuter rail system-called FrontRunner because it speedily runs along the Wasatch Front-in Salt Lake, Weber and Davis counties on April 26, 2008. UTA broke ground on the second phase of FrontRunner from Provo to Salt Lake City in August 2008.

The FrontRunner South line will travel 45 miles along the existing Union Pacific Railroad freight corridor from the Provo Intermodal Center through Utah County to the Salt Lake Central Station in downtown Salt Lake City. FrontRunner South will feature eight stations with the possibility of adding two future stations.

UTA and its contractor are committed to providing the public with up-to-date information regarding construction activities and pertinent design information during the course of the project.
