Hundreds of people braved snow flurries and chilly temperatures to ride the S-Line for the first time last weekend. More than 2,300 boardings were recorded during the S-Line community celebration, which ran from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7.

To celebrate the opening of Utah Transit Authority’s first streetcar, UTA will give away five FAREPAY cards loaded with $20 at the S-Line Fairmont Stop today at 5:15 p.m. For a limited time, riders who pay with FAREPAY cards, bank-issued contactless credit cards and mobile payment apps like ISIS and Google Wallet can ride the S-Line for $1. Riders who pay with cash or use standard credit cards at ticket vending machines will be charged the regular $2.50 S-Line fare.

The S-Line runs from Central Pointe Station in South Salt Lake to Fairmont Park in Salt Lake City’s Sugar House neighborhood. The S-Line operates at speeds of 15 to 25 mph and makes eight stops along the two-mile route, making it an optimal way to explore surrounding neighborhoods and connect to the rest of UTA’s rail system.

Visitors at Saturday’s event could ride the line for free if they donated a nonperishable food item to the Utah Food Bank. The community celebration featured carolers, children’s activities and free food provided by local vendors. The line opened for regular service on Sunday, Dec. 8.

When riding the S-Line, please note:

The $1 S-Line fare is a limited-time promotion. Riders who use their FAREPAY cards are not eligible for an additional 20-percent FAREPAY promotional discount.

Passengers transferring from the S-Line to regular-service bus, TRAX, or FrontRunner will receive a $1 transfer credit if the transfer is completed within two hours of purchasing an S-Line ticket. To receive the appropriate credit, passengers transferring to the TRAX system should tap off the S-Line card reader at Central Pointe and tap on the TRAX card reader.

S-Line access is included for riders with day passes, regular monthly passes, premium monthly passes, minor monthly passes, as well as Eco Pass holders and most student passes.  In addition, S-Line access is included in the Freedom Access Pass for paratransit-eligible riders.

UTA would also like to remind drivers and pedestrians to use caution when approaching the S-Line corridor. Cross-corridor traffic should yield at all stops to S-Line trains, pedestrians and cyclists traveling in the corridor.
