“We are deeply saddened by the death of George Floyd and by racial injustice that has long plagued our country and communities. We stand in solidarity with those communities across our country taking steps to create a more just world. As a public transit service, we strive to move all people, to increase mobility and access to opportunity for everyone, and to provide safe and equitable access to public spaces and streets. We are part of the solution when it comes to structural equity and racial justice.
All 2,700 UTA employees show up each day to serve the community. Our transit police officers work hard to serve our passengers and members of the community with compassion and respect. We do not tolerate acts of racism and injustice on our public transit system nor within our agency. We acknowledge that this statement is not nearly enough; that our actions will speak louder than our words.
We commit to continue to listen, pause and improve upon what we learn; taking the time to respect that these are stressful times that require thoughtful introspection on our accountability to the people and communities we serve. It is with purpose that we reflect upon and examine our policies, practices, and decisions with a renewed vision of equity, access, and opportunity. We must do everything we can to ensure our work fosters a more just future for all.”
